Advice for someone thinking of entering the PSW field (3 replies)

Hello Everyone,

We recently received a request from someone interested in becoming a PSW. Please read his message below and post any replies to help him out. I told him about our forum and the weath of knowledge our members have. He will be checking the forum to see what you have to say.

From: Leonard
Question:
I am considering entering the psw field. I have the utmost of respect for the work that you perform and I think it would be a great privilege to support a client in this role. I would appreciate your response(s) to the following questions/concerns:

1. I am in my mid 40s and currently not in the greatest shape. One concern I have are the multiple physical requirements of the job. How concerned should I be about this? Also, my motor skills I would describe as below average. I appreciate that this work requires a high degree of accuracy. How important is it would you say to work quickly and what would you say to someone like me looking to get in to the field who values accuracy over working quickly?

2. I appreciate that some medical knowledge is required for this work. How concerned would you be with someone like me who has very minimal medical knowledge?

3. Do the majority of psws work in one particular type of practice setting (eg: long term care)or is it varied?

4. What are some the greatest joys you find in your work?

5. What are some of the greatest challenges you currently face ?

I am most grateful for your feedback and welcome any other comments that you may have. Leonard

Forum Rules & Etiquette (no replies)

The following are a list of ground rules for participating in the Personal Support Worker Community of Practice online chat forum. If you fail to follow these guidelines, your post will be deleted.

1. Be kind: Please refrain from abusive language and no personal attacks. We expect users to treat each other with respect and to use the message board to network and share information. Remember that your opinion is one of many, though you may disagree with another person, you must remember to do so in a respectful manner.

2. Please be careful with the tone of your message. Posts will be read by people from a variety of backgrounds and ages. Some types of humour, such as sarcasm, are difficult to read. With that in mind, please remember this when reading posts. If you are unclear about a person’s intent, ask for clarification.

3. Do not type in all capitals. This is considered shouting in messages. If you write in all caps, you may offend someone.

4. Give and take. Help others as often as or more than you ask for help.

5. Do not post any information that you want private. Posts should not contain personal, identifiable information. If you choose to share personal information with another person, please send them a private message.

6. Stay on topic: Please pay attention to the topic of your messages and be sure that they relate to the topic. If you wish to have an off-topic discussion with someone, please send them a private message.

7. Before you post a subject or question, browse through the subject lines to find out if the topic has already been covered. When asking a question, provide as much information as possible so that people reading it are better able to answer you.

8. Have a clear subject line: When posting a new subject, please be sure to include a clear title. Examples of good titles are: “Safe Lifting Techniques”; “Best Practices in Dementia”; and “The Future of Personal Support in Ontario”. Example of bad titles are: “Looking for”; “Help” ; “…” ; and “Question”. Please be sure to indicate the subject matter in the title so that it is clear to other users what the content of the message is.

9. No large attachments: Our chat forum supports the ability to post attachments. We encourage you to share documents related to the topic, however if the attachment is very large, please send to pswcop@psno.ca and we will post to the PSNO website under “links”.

10 Do not post content that violates copyright.

11. This message board is not to be used for advertisement or solicitation. You may, however, post information of an event or product if someone has made query. If you would like an event or job posted, please send the details to sarah.blakely@psno.ca and we would be happy to post on our website in its correct location.

12. If you ever get lost on a page, just click the Home Button on the lop left corner or the PSNO logo and you will brought back to the home page.

13. Have fun & use this forum as an opportunity for personal and professional development! :)
